Growing up an Alabama fan, Brady Jowers finally got to visit the university he hopes to attend in six years. The seventh grader from Opp walked around campus for the first time Sunday afternoon with his family, taking in the highlights of the Capstone: Bryant-Denny Stadium, Denny Chimes, the President's Mansion and the Easter Bunny standing on the lawn.

“The Kite Runner ” (2007)
Directed by Marc Forster
Drama / Rated PG-13 / 2 hours /
English-Dari-Pashtu-Urdu-Russian / color
Starring Khalid Abdalla, Atossa Leoni, Shaun Toub,
Sayed Jafar Masihullah Gharibzada
Nominated for 2008 Golden Globe for Best Foreign
Language Film

Synopsis
Based on the international bestseller by Khaled
Hosseini, The Kite Runner is a fascinating historical
epic set in 20th-century Afghanistan. In 1978, Amir
(Zekiria Ebrahimi) and Hassan (Ahmad Khan Mahmoodzada)
are young boys living in Kabul , where Hassan and his
father, Ali (Nabi Tanha), work as servants for Amir
and his father, Baba (Homayoun Ershadi). Amir and
Hassan make an excellent team in kite competitions,
with Hassan having a gift for running down kites, but
after one contest, he is bullied by Assef (Elham
Ehsas), who does unspeakable things to him as Amir
watches from a distance and then runs away, not
helping his friend. As the Russians and then the
Taliban take over Afghanistan , Baba and Amir escape
to America , where they make a new home in San
Francisco . But even as he graduates from college and
meets a beautiful young woman, Soraya (Atossa Leoni),
who is also from Kabul, Amir (now played by Khalid
Abdalla) is haunted by his cowardice and can't turn
down an opportunity to try to make things right when
it is offered by his father's old friend Rahim Khan
(Shaun Toub)--even if it means risking his life. The
Kite Runner was adapted for the screen by David
Benioff (The 25th Hour), with much of the dialogue
spoken in Dari, one of the primary languages in
Afghanistan . Director Marc Foster (Monster’s Ball,
Finding Neverland) does a deft job navigating the
complicated story, which moves from Afghanistan to San
Francisco and Pakistan (with much of the film actually
shot in China ), using many nonprofessional actors and
a subtle score composed by Alberto Iglesias. Ebrahimi
and Mahmoodzada make impressive debuts, with solid
work by Abddalla, Leoni, and especially Ershadi.

ACOUSTIC NIGHT FEATURES MELISSA GREENER AND BLAINE

( Tuscaloosa ) Acoustic Night at the Bama Theatre
will feature alternative/folk singer Melissa Greener
from Austin , TX and Blaine Duncan from Tuscaloosa on
Wednesday, March 12, 2008. The performance will take
place at the Bama Theatre’s Greensboro Room, 600
Greensboro Avenue , in downtown Tuscaloosa , and will
    begin at 9:30 p.m. Doors open at 9pm with a $3 cover
charge. Acoustic Night features new and upcoming
artists from around the country throughout the
calendar year with a full-service bar always
available. For more information call 205-758-5195, x5
    or go to www.tuscarts.org.

Greener Bio: A resident of Austin , TX , Melissa
Greener both sings and writes her own material. She
is a native of Detroit , her mother a classically
trained operatic vocalist, and her father - as she
describes - a hippie. After leaving Detroit , she
lived in various places around the world - Europe,
Middle East, Far East, and Canada , before locating in
Austin . An avid trekker, she has climbed in the
Swiss Alps, Slovakia , Sinai, and Tibet . Greener was
a writer from a very early age, first journaling, then
poetry, songwriting, and finally MySpace “ramblings.”
Touring all over the country, she plays "listening
rooms,” house concerts, festivals, bars, clubs,
theatres, sidewalks, parking lots, and subways -
singing truths she has come to believe in – and
stretching some, only in the name of art. Greener has
recently released her second album, titled Fall from
    the Sky.

"Melissa has the package. Lovely melodies, a beautiful
    voice and a
stunning stage presence. But, what tops the cake are
    her excellent
guitar skills. She creates memorable arrangements
    that definitely
rise above the crowd." - Roger Allan, KGSR, Austin ,
    TX

“The soul of a poet, the rhythm of a rocker!”
    - Michael Terry, Uncle Calvin's Coffeehouse, Dallas ,
    TX

Duncan Bio: Getting his start on the
singer-songwriter scene in Tuscaloosa , Blaine Duncan
maintains the plain-spoken roots of his origins,
although most of his shows are blasted full throttle
with the backing of a forceful and talented rock band,
    the Lookers.

Quickly becoming a crowd favorite for his quirky songs
and random banter, Duncan creates an interesting mix:
a fusion of heartfelt lyrics, driving rock, and
tongue-in-cheek regionalism that manages to also shine
a light on universal themes found in lives of the
common man and woman at any given show.

It is the live show that has garnered Blaine and the
Lookers a following, with each one creating a sense of
energy and urgency not normally found in
singer-songwriter based acts. It is incredible fun.

    Honors College E-Newsletter #9, Spring 2008

As you know, registration comes up later this month. Be very attentive for updates to the UHP course offerings on our website. To download the list of Honors courses, go to http://honors.ua.edu/uhp/current.shtml and click on "Download the List of Honors Courses!"

We like to share news about neat things our Honors students are doing. You can help some Honors students win an award by reading this item and following the link: Laughlin Tagg and Laura Godorecci recently completed a short film for a New College course with Dr. Janeann Dill. They also entered into an international film competition called Pangea Day (www.pangeaday.org)--a contest "looking for films that will make people laugh, pause and think" and that deal with broad issues that affect people from all cultures, all over the world. Pangea Day will select 30 finalists by the end of April who will in turn have their films screened on May 10 in cities around the world, as well as online. The films entered for Pangea Day have been uploaded on YouTube, and one of the selection criteria for the 30 finalists is how many hits a film gets, as well as the comments it receives. Honors College students can go and view the video and make comments; then spread word of this contest. It help UA perform well in this international contest! The film's title is "What Direction Home?", and all one needs to do to find it is type the title into the YouTube search box: the film should pop up immediately--it will be the one with the thumbnail showing a row of bicycles.

Stewards are current undergraduate students committed to helping the University of Alabama Office of Admissions and Scholarships recruit top students from around the nation. The organization is completing its third year of existence and has grown in size, professionalism and effectiveness since its inception in April 2006. Stewards have created personal relationships with prospective students and families and provided them with meaningful individualized experiences during campus visits and admissions receptions. Throughout the academic year, Stewards participate in off-campus admissions receptions and on-campus recruitment lunches, in addition to escorting visiting students to classes and meetings, offering the opportunity for overnight stays on campus and maintaining contact with prospective students after their visits. Please go to www.sdbama.org to apply; applications should be e-mailed to sdbama@gmail.com as soon as possible for consideration.
