Acoustic Night @ The Bama Theatre This Thursday!

Acoustic Night continues in the Greensboro Room of The Bama Theatre this Thursday, November 15, at 8:00PM with musical guests Lauren Krothe and Lee Taylor.

Hailing from Huntsville, Lee Taylor is back by popular demand after opening Acoustic Night last month and stealing the show. This talented guitarist/singer-songwriter brings to mind the songwriting style of John Mayer, David Gray, etc., while his guitar talents remind us of James Taylor and Mark Knoffler.

Lauren Krothe returns as the hands-down favorite of Acoustic Night from last season. Lauren's style is reminiscent of the keyboard wizardry and songwriting styles of Laura Nyro, Tori Amos, and Joni Mitchell. This will be the Birmingham resident's third performance at Acoustic Night in the past year.

Admission is a skimpy $3, with all proceeds going to the artists. Our award-winning bar will be open, featuring imported and domestic beer, wine, and mixed drinks.
See you at The Bama!

Asthmatic Kitty Newsletter!

ASTHMATIC KITTY RECORDS MAIL LIST NOVEMBER EDITION

0. Introduction
1. The Great Sufjan Song Xmas Xchange! Xmas Stream!
2. Chris Schlarb Quadraphonic Listening Events
3. Last chance to catch My Brightest Diamond's Workhorse Live
4. New hoody colors!
5. Castanets on tour

0------INTRODUCTION-----

It's nearly Christmas time! That means it's cold (good thing we have hoodies!) but it's also time to start humming the Xmas tunes. Sufjan will help you with that one - or maybe you can help him!

The end of the year also means it's the last time anyone can catch My Brightest Diamond tour from her Bring Me the Workhorse album.

Castanets have decided to escape the cold by...escaping to Europe? Ok.

And finally our newest roster addition, Chris Schlarb, has set up some Quadraphonic Listening Events in cities across the US. These are free and all-ages, and will feature at least one of the 50 or so collaborators on his debut album, Twilight & Ghost Stories.

Read for more!

1------SUFJAN'S CHRISTMAS CONTEST! FREE STREAM------

It's Christmas time again! That means tightly bundled scarves, lively debates on the merits of real/plastic trees, a litany of Christmas television specials, and finding the perfect retro Christmas wrapping paper.

And gifts of course! Who could forget the gifts!

That's why Sufjan Stevens is busy working on a very special gift right now, for a very special person. And in the spirit of Christmas, that person will give Sufjan a similarly special gift.

Here's how it works: write an original Christmas song, record it, and email the song to us. Asthmatic Kitty will pick a winner, and that person will trade rights to their song for rights to a new Sufjan Christmas song.

Just like a gift exhange, Sufjan's new song becomes your song. You can hoard it for yourself, sell it to a major soft drink corporation, use it in your daughter's first Christmas video, or share it for free on your website. No one except Sufjan and you will hear his song, unless you decide otherwise. You get the song and all legal rights to it. We get the same rights to your song.

Contest begins November 9th, and all submissions must be in by midnight December 1st. We will contact and announce the winner on or around December 15th.

We are also placing Sufjan's 5-album Christmas set online for free until December 25th!

Go here for more details, and to listen to the full Sufjan Christmas album for free:

2------CHRIS SCHLARB NEWS, LISTENING PARTIES------

Our newest addition to the Asthmatic Kitty roster has been busy, even though his album doesn't release until December 4th. Pitchfork Media got their hands on a copy of Twilight and Ghost Stories, and reviewer Joe Tangari said this: "Twilight is a unique and remarkably universal record, and one that offsets its projected loneliness with a great sense of warmth. Indeed, it's perfect for listening to in the very circumstances that birthed the concept, when you're alone with the weather, wondering what to do."

We certainly don't want anyone going Schlarb-less, so we've gone ahead and started taking preorders for Twilight on the album's page below. It's $10 plus shipping, and we'll ship it around December 4.

You can catch the album at a variety of quadraphonic listening events that Chris has organized...see the bottom of this email for dates and locations. These events will feature the album in its entirety in quadraphonic stereo and in some cases performances by one or more of the 50ish collaborators Chris worked with on Twilight.

3------CATCH MBD'S WORKHORSE WHILE YOU CAN------

My Brightest Diamond's debut album, Bring Me the Workhorse, has seen a lot of land in its day. Frontwoman Shara Worden has toured near and far with the album, but all good things must come to an end.

And so, Workhorse embarks once more with a few more shows alongside Tim Fite for a brief spin around the Midwest, Canada, and New England. Then MBD will play a few bits with Sufjan Stevens in Sydney, Australia and that will be end of touring with the Workhorse. Into the studios with Shara for a new widely anticipated album! Catch this show while you can before it returns to the hills for a well-earned respite!

Tour dates at the bottom of this email.

4------NEW HOODY COLORS! NOW WITH MODELS!------

Brrr! It's getting cold. Good thing we have hoodies in stock!

We're so honored that you loved our Laura Park designed hoodies, that we added a new color! We now have a brown pullover, a brown zip-up, and an army zip-up. We also recruited a few friends to show them off for us!

If you have any pictures of yourself wearing Asthmatic Kitty apparel, post it on Flickr and tag it with "asthmaticapparel" (without the quotes). We'd love to see our shirts in active duty!

5------CASTANETS TOUR!-------

In their Illegal Leak of the Week column, Seattle's weekly paper The Stranger called Castanets' frontman Ray Raposa a great American songwriter. BBC wrote, "Raymond Raposa, the ex-surfer behind the ever-shifting line-up, sounds like Neil Young after spending a few nights on a park bench, his decayed folky croak the perfect thread to link these hushed laments."

The album in discussion is In the Vines, now available for purchase in our shop for just $10 (+SH). Link below.

Or, you can buy it from Ray himself by catching the Castanets on tour. Castanets will be touring in the UK with Dirty Projectors, then in Spain, and finally over the rest of Europe with Scout Niblett. See dates below.

November 13 at 8pm
"A Streetcar Named Desire " (1951)
Directed by Elia Kazan and based on the play by Tennessee Williams

Drama-Southern Gothic / Rated PG / 2 hours / black and white
Starring Marlon Brando, Vivien Leigh, Kim Hunter, and Karl Malden
Academy Awards for Best Actress (Leigh), Best Supporting Actor (Malden), Best Supporting Actress (Hunter), Best Art-Set Decoration (black and white); Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress (Hunter)

Synopsis: Set in the French Quarter of New Orleans during the restless years following World War Two, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE is the story of Blanche DuBois, a fragile and neurotic woman on a desperate prowl for someplace in the world to call her own. After being exiled from her hometown of Auriol, Mississippi for seducing a seventeen-year-old boy at the school where she taught English, Blanche explains her unexpected appearance on Stanley and Stella's (Blanche's sister) doorstep as nervous exhaustion. This, she claims, is the result of a series of financial calamities which have recently claimed the family plantation, Belle Reve. Suspicious, Stanley points out that "under Louisiana's Napoleonic code what belongs to the wife belongs to the husband." Stanley, a sinewy and brutish man, is as territorial as a panther. He tells Blanche he doesn't like to be swindled and demands to see the bill of sale. This encounter defines Stanley and Blanche's relationship. They are opposing camps and Stella is caught in no-man's-land. But Stanley and Stella are deeply in love. Blanche's efforts to impose herself between the two only enrages the animal inside Stanley. When Mitch -- a card-playing buddy of Stanley's -- arrives on the scene, Blanche begins to see a way out of her predicament. Mitch, himself alone in the world, reveres Blanche as a beautiful and refined woman. Yet, as rumors of Blanche's past in Auriol begin to catch up to her, her circumstances become unbearable.

Save the dates! Visiting scholar Sylviane Diouf - two great talks 11/12 and 11/13!

I received this notice in my email today. This sounds really interesting. Check it out:

Greetings ---

We are honored to be hosting Dr. Sylviane Diouf,
curator for the Schomburg Center for Research Black Culture in New York next week --She will present two talks on her research and writing -- download the flier here for both talks: http://www.lib.ua.edu/events/documents/diouf_bothtalks_draft.pdf
The first: Monday, November 12 at 11 am in Gorgas Library Room 205 is an informal talk --- African Muslims in the Americas with a slide show "Literate Muslims in Africa and the Americas During Slavery" (based on her 1999 award winning book, Servants of Allah: African Muslims Enslaved in the Americas).

The second talk is Tuesday, November 13 at 4 pm in Gorgas Library Room 205 (followed by a book signing and reception)
This is on her latest book: Dreams of Africa in Alabama: The Slave Ship Clotilda and the Story of the Last Africans Brought to America. (Oxford University Press, 2007) Flier for the Dreams lecture --http://www.lib.ua.edu/events/documents/diouf_flier.pdf
Come hear more about this fascinating and little known part of Alabama History -- "In a tale worthy of a novelist, Sylviane Diouf provides a well-researched, nicely written, and moving account of the last slave ship to America, whose 110 captives
arrived in Mobile in 1860 and, after the war, created their dream of Africa in Alabama." -- Howard Jones, author of Mutiny on the Amistad (and UA Professor of History!)

Sylviane Diouf holds a PhD from the University of Paris and is a curator at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York City. Dr. Diouf is the 2007 co-winner of the Wesley-Logan Prize of the American Historical Association. Her website is http://www.sylvianediouf.com/index.htm

As always, these events are free and open to the public! This talk and Dr. Diouf's visit to The University of Alabama is cosponsored by UA Libraries, New College, American Studies, African-American Studies, The Summersell Center for the Study of the South, Modern Languages and Classics, and Religious Studies and the generous support of Lakey and Susan Tolbert. Claire Lynch - http://www.clairelynch.com/
with opening act Ruby Jane Smith - http://www.mississippifiddler.com/
Thursday, November 8, 2007
7:30 p.m.
Tickets: $16 (reserved-floor and balcony)

Claire Lynch has long been recognized as a creative influence in bluegrass music – first for her early years with Alabama's Front Porch String Band (which was labeled as “a musical force to be reckoned with” by John Starling), and later for her superb singing and songwriting which have been recorded on five projects for Rounder Records. Two of those recordings were nominated for a Grammy and, among her many other nominations, a win was scored for “Female Vocalist of the Year” with the IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) in 1997.

In 2006, after a six-year hiatus from touring, she landed on her feet again with New Day which enjoyed a run on the Bluegrass Album Chart reaching #2, while “Train Long Gone” topped the Bluegrass Song Chart at #1 for two consecutive months. Much of the credit was due to her touring and recording mates (Jim Hurst, Missy Raines, Jason Thomas) who comprise the Claire Lynch Band and are award-winners themselves. Dolly Parton credits Claire with “one of the sweetest, purest and best lead voices in the music business today.” Claire's harmonies have graced the recordings of many stellar musicians, from Ralph Stanley to Linda Ronstadt. Equally gifted as a songwriter, her songs have been recorded by the Seldom Scene, Patty Loveless, Kathy Mattea, the Cherryholmes, the Whites, and others.

By any measure, the Claire Lynch Band is high on the bluegrass world's A-List, with musicians whose accolades include IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year and two Grammy nominations for Best Bluegrass Album (Claire); six IBMA Bass Player of the Year awards ( Missy Raines ); and two IBMA Guitar Player of the Year awards (Jim Hurst). Claire's collaboration with Missy Raines and Jim Hurst dates back to the days of the Front Porch String Band, resulting in a seasoned sound that is simultaneously unpretentious and richly textured. It has a down-home, front porch sensibility—until you realize that it is a rare front porch, indeed, that has ever hosted musicians of this caliber. Jim Hurst throws out impossible leads effortlessly, and the band is grounded by Missy Raines' unerring instinct for the right groove and her lithe, boundary-stretching bass lines. The band's newest member, Toronto native Jason Thomas, brings monster chops on fiddle and mandolin, supported by remarkable musical versatility and imagination that have made him instantly at home in one of the greatest bluegrass bands currently on the scene.

Born on November 17, 1994, in Dallas , TX , Ruby Jane Smith is one of the world's premiere junior fiddlers and a fast-rising star in the landscape of country, bluegrass-Americana music. With deep familial and cultural ties throughout the Southeast, she resides in Columbus , MS , where she homeschools with her mother, JoBelle Smith, when not traveling as a musician, actress, or model.

Ruby Jane exhibited a strong connection to music, beyond a keen interest, as early as age one. The responses to the ancient sounds and rhythms of traditional Hebrew music were noted as remarkable and she began classical violin instruction at age two. At age eight, she was introduced to the sounds of Americana music in Santa Fe , NM , which led to a complete devotion to the stylings of old-time and bluegrass music. Subsequently, she began old-time fiddle lessons, which included the study of its unique bowing techniques, archaic tunings, and depth of expression. After only six fiddle lessons, she won first place in the first fiddle competition she entered, beginning a run of victories that continues to gain momentum.

She was granted an apprenticeship by the Mississippi Arts Commission at age eight to apprentice with Charles T. Smith, one of the last great Mississippi old-time fiddlers. For the past two years, she has competed in dozens of prestigious music competitions and performed with many bluegrass greats, including Marty Stuart, Rhonda Vincent ("The Queen of Bluegrass"), Mike Snider, Jesse McReynolds, Jim Brock, James Monroe, Carl Jackson, and many others.

We Talk During Movies announces Sunday's viewing

From a message from We Talk During Movies' Facebook group:

Hey,
This week we are watching The Core @ 3:30 pm CST.
"The Earth's inner core has stopped spinning, and scientist Josh Keyes (Aaron Eckhart) must discover the cause before the world literally falls apart. He and a group of brilliant researchers burrow deep into the Earth's center in a subterranean vessel piloted by Maj. Beck Childs (Hilary Swank) and Col. Robert Iverson (Bruce Greenwood). There, they'll detonate a device that they hope will get the world to turn again ... before it's too late."

Thanks,
John Brooks Pounders

P.S. As usual try to show up a little early and bring your DVD/Netflix account.

Student Filmmakers Join Us on the Jake and Yahweh Show - Vote for their film!

This Halloween the Jake and Yahweh show had as its guests a few filmmakers from a team of students at the University of Alabama at Birmingham who prepared a movie for the Apple Insomnia Film Scramble ( http://www.apple.com/education/insomnia/ ).

I met Charlie Brown Sanders, a member of Team Vodka Chrome, at the Nada Surf/Sea Wolf concert at the Bottle Tree Cafe in Birmingham, and he told me about the film and introduced me to some of his team mates. Of course 90.7 The Capstone was excited to have them come on the Jake and Yahweh show to tell our listeners about their film.

Our guests Tollie Jones, Jaime Vance, and Charlie (in the form of a voice recording, as he unfortunately couldn't be physically present) enthusiastically discussed the film-making process and the contest itself, with intermittent comments from "Charlie." They're great guys, and I'm looking forward to hearing about their future projects and sharing them with you, the listener.

Here's their movie: http://edcommunity.apple.com/insomnia_fall07/item.php?itemID=1199

And here's a letter from Charlie to everybody:

Hey everyone,

So me and a group of budding 'film dudes' have entered into the Apple Insomnia Film Contest. What is that? It's an insane-o competition where you've got to make a 3 minute film in 24 hours. You also have to include at least 3 of their 7 specified items in your film. This may not sound that tough, but working with a single camera (probably 99% of the teams) this is really hard! Myself and a few other members of our team (Team Vodka Chrome) worked, literally, for 24 hours straight.

Our film, Panic'd, is a comedy about a guy who drops his wallet while running at a track. He runs with giant headphones on, listening to suspenseful music akin to the soundtrack to 'The Terminator' (who does that?...) and cannot hear the calls of people trying to return his wallet. He believes he's being chased, and runs- causing a chain reaction of ridiculousness of which you'll see when you watch it. I'll say this though, someone gets beat down with a laptop computer.

Being a bunch of young guys just getting started, we need everyone's help! The first part of this competition is essentially a popularity contest. Over 1700 films made it into the contest, and only twenty five teams will reach a finalist group. How do you become part of that 25 group? Votes. That's what we need your help with, voting for our film!!

If you are familiar with Apple, iTunes, and have an Apple ID, the process of voting will be pretty straight forward for you. Simply go http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vZWRjb21tdW5pdHkuYXBwbGUuY29tL2luc29tbmlhX2ZhbGwwNy9pdGVtLnBocD9pdGVtSUQ9MTE5OQ== to find our film at Apple's Insomnia Film Gallery, and look to the right hand side for "Rate This Film". Follow all necessary steps and you should be good to go. We cannot thank you enough!!

Oh.. I forgot to mention what the 2 winning groups are awarded. Each group will get FIVE MACBOOK PRO LAPTOPS full of software!!! This is an absolute dream prize for any ambitious youngster trying to work in the visual creative field. Again, this is why we're on our knees, practically begging for time and your votes!

Myself, and everyone else on our D.I.Y. Team Vodka Chrome are graciously indebted to anyone who takes the time to check our stuff out and vote. THANKS SO MUCH.

If you do not have an Apple ID, you will need one to vote for the film. Below, I've created explicit instructions on how to obtain one and route your way back to our film to vote for it. It may seem confusing, but this is as simple as we could get it, believe it or not! If anyone' is confused, email me at sensleman@gmail.com or call me at 205.218.7618 and I'll try to help as best I can.

Again... thank you, everyone.

Dave Riley to Play at Little Willie's in Tuscaloosa

Dave Riley will be playing at Little Willies in Tuscaloosa on Weds. Nov. 7th at 9pm. You should all try to come out to the show, because, as Andrew "Cougar Wiles" Cook says, "Dave's the real deal."

Phoenix, AZ - Blue Witch Records is proud to announce the release of DAVE RILEY and BOB CORRITORE TRAVELIN' THE DIRT ROAD on September 11, 2007.

Guitar player/singer DAVE RILEY and harmonica player BOB CORRITORE's TRAVELIN' THE DIRT ROAD takes the listener on a musical journey through the Delta. Produced by Bob Corritore, TRAVELIN' THE DIRT ROAD features 10 original tracks of powerful downhome blues including 8 Dave Riley compositions and two ("I'm Not Your Junkman" and "Doggone Blues") written by his friend (and former bandmate) the late John Weston. Dave and Bob met three years ago and quickly became fast friends and musical collaborators. They have a natural blues chemistry with Riley's gritty Mississippi vocals and downhome blues guitar and Corritore's passionate, full-toned harp playing and the result is a musical joy and exuberance all too seldom heard.

KBA Award-winning triple threat harmonica player/producer/club owner BOB CORRITORE’s deep & varied blues history are highlighted on the new Blue Witch Records releases. Growing up in Chicago, Bob began playing harmonica at age 13, learning from some of Chicago's blues legends -- Big Walter Horton, Junior Wells, Louis Myers and others. His harmonica appears on over 25 recordings. Bob's played with many of the blues greats including Jimmy Rogers, Bo Diddley, Sam Lay, Pinetop Perkins, Honeyboy Edwards, R.L. Burnside, Koko Taylor and Willie Dixon. As a Grammy-nominated producer, Bob Corritore lives to be in the studio and has a history of production credits on over 36 CDs.

Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, guitar player/singer/songwriter DAVE RILEY spent his formative years playing and singing Gospel music. He moved to Chicago's west side as a teenager living near Maxwell Street and its vibrant Blues scene. After joining the army he played in a military band traveling from base to base entertaining the troops and opening USO shows. In the mid-90s Riley met Blues legends Sam Carr, Frank Frost, and John Weston. They formed a friendship and a musical bond which lead Riley back to the Delta and back into Blues full time.

HOUSE ROCKIN' & BLUES SHOUTIN'! and TRAVELIN' THE DIRT ROAD are the second and third releases this year by Phoenix, AZ-based Blue Witch Records. The earlier release, Blues shouter BIG PETE PEARSON's acclaimed I'M HERE BABY! (February 2007) "represents the best of vintage and modern blues." (Ron Wynn/Nashville City Paper)
