Building Construction Program

The Master of Building Construction (MBC) program at Auburn University will be making a presentation at the University of Alabama on November 15th. The presentation will take place in room 379 of Bidgood Hall at 5:30 PM. Faculty from the program will speak about the construction industry and opportunities in the Master's program in construction at Auburn University.

Brett Richardson and Jeffrey Brewer were students at Alabama before entering the MBC program at Auburn University. Mr. Brewer has a B.S in Environmental Science from UA and commented about the program "... this program has provided me with the knowledge and confidence to succeed in a very competitive industry". Mr. Brewer currently works for the Daniel Corporation in Birmingham. Mr. Richardson is currently a student in the MBC program at Auburn.

In the past two years 90% of the students in the program came from a background other than construction. Students with an undergraduate degree in another discipline such as business or liberal arts and trying to enter the construction industry have found the program to be a perfect fit. Career change students can complete the program in four to five consecutive semesters and enter the construction industry. Admission is competitively judged based on the undergraduate grade point average, test scores on the graduate record exam, letters of recommendation and the candidates' statement of purpose for applying to the program. Upon admission candidates are once again competitively chosen for 'Graduate Assistantships'. A graduate assistant does not pay tuition at Auburn University and is required to assist an instructor in his/her teaching and research agenda. A competitive stipend is also provided for graduate assistants.

The SGA Department of Environmental Concerns is celebrating America
Recycles Day on Thursday, November 15. There will be an Environmental
Fair in the Ferguson Center from 11am to 1pm. Environmental
organizations from around campus and the Tuscaloosa community will have
booths set up so that you can ask questions and get involved.

Then at 7pm in Ten Hoor 30, there will be a screening of Kilowatt Ours, an
optimistic look at how you can cut your energy consumption (and bills!)
in half.

Final Fantasy and Cadence Weapon, reviewed by Drew Cook

My friend and I went for Final Fantasy, but I loved Cadence Weapon- I enjoyed both of the touring headliners, but a pleasant surprise was Cadence Weapon.
Both were from Canada and played such up.

I had been eager to get to the Bottletree for some time, but the trip (though not that bad), and other conditions: lack of money and a catalyst for going (tickets/friend/band I knew and liked playing) hadn't come together.

My friend wanted to go anyway, as a viola/violin performer she had special interest in seeing Final Fantasy (the guy) performing and to possibly pick his brain as she had interest in doing what he does.

A friend I got in on the station ticket bought me a drink and I enjoyed such, but lamented for a little bit not having any money as the guy next to me at the bar bit into a delicious smelling burger and my friend continued buying drinks (I was DD anyway, so no biggie).

The starting band, Lylas wasn't bad, but the first song they played would have been completely forgetable traditional song, but they did it slightly out of tune (I believe my friend remarked that the vocals were) and were somewhat loud, but played their instruments well, but we had come for Final Fantasy and my friend was soon distracted by other matters as Cadence Weapon came on and I quickly enjoyed that.

For those uninitiated to Nerdcore, Cadence Weapon is either a good introduction or just a damn good rapper. He isn't Nerdcore hip-hop though, a genre almost solely ruled by MC Frontalot- of internet fame. Cadence Weapon doesn't have a rap about webcomics (he isn't the unofficial rapper of webcomics like MC Frontalot) or math and computer science stuff...soo much. But he is clever, well read, and references things like video games, literature or even Boots Riley (of the anarchist hip hop group The Coup- old UA people like me will remember that he came to this campus before the Iraq war started and possibly that their album "Party Music" became controversial for its original cover after 9/11).

I wish I could properly quote a couple lines from "Black Hand."

While I felt somewhat reminded of clever rappers of decades past (Chuck D of Public Enemy or even Ice Cube), the stand out of the performance was the backing music- ably delivered by DJ Weasel. Stage presence overcame the stuttering machine gun delivery of lyrics mixed with not so catching or otherwise confusing title lyrics (which people still jumped to). I got a close standing position early on, and even when I briefly left the huddled masses, I managed to get it back, more or less.

The beats were killer, and Cadence Weapon kept the crowd pumping- those that weren't sitting on the porch area anyway. It was loud, but worth it, the acoustics actually seemed to be more merciful on people closer to the stage than a bit farther away (but maybe that was because I didn't mind as much).

They even did a cover of Joy Division's "Isolation."

Now, Final Fantasy- Mr. Owen Pallett came on and did a very long set (almost exhaustively long to my friend, but mostly I just found myself uncomfortable standing so long, but he had me from the start at least).

He did something I didn't totally expect, he used a slew of pedals to loop and/or distort the sounds he was making with this violin. This at first blew my mind then immediately became more obvious as a solo tactic- nonetheless he shifted through them pretty flawlessly, only noting his mistakes a few times and thus exposing them. He was charmingly self-critical, but almost annoyingly so toward the end, but for most of the show he couldn't have annoyed me as I was more or less enchanted by the songs- the lyrics however were either not terribly well miked or he didn't deliver them very well in my opinion though they sounded nice- I understood him better on the first few songs.

As my friend pointed out later, his performance would have done well with some actual percussion- he used some techniques that I was impressed by at first, but would admit to becoming somewhat less impressive or even almost irritating later...I guess the novelty wore off, but I'm not a classically trained musician so I doubt my impression was as borderline negative as my friend's. He's talented, that is for sure, but so was Cadence Weapon, and as much as I'm sure everyone in the Bottletree enjoyed the show (myself included) my friend's point that he didn't stand all too well on his own as a solo act has me thinking I somewhat agree with her. He's played well and sung back up lyrics with band such as Arcade Fire, but apart from the hipster geekdom in the Bottletree, other venues and some Canadians I won't meet- I doubt he'll go mainstream any time soon on his own.

I accepted his producer not being there to assist at least on the piano songs (which were a welcome inclusion after half an hour or so of straight violin with looped percussive techniques or backing phrases).

He did do an encore as demanded- but brought on the now drunk duo of Cadence Weapon and Dj Weasel so they could "battle" out their apparent backstage arguement.

Both groups had apparently been on the road for a while and both groups had also consumed a fair number of PBR tallboys- which was understandable, and Cadence Weapon was still comprehensible, but barely whereas Dj Weasel actually gained a voice with his inebriation and seemed to win the crowd's favor on his freestyling even though Cadence Weapon had a few choice slams.

I believe Final Fantasy closed with a Maria Carey cover and did such rather well in fact, but I'm not sure of the song's origin's, merely that the crowd enjoyed it.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the show, both groups were interesting and even with some mild to moderate criticisms coming from my friend about Final Fantasy's not terribly impressive technical expertise with a lack of percussion versus his good songwriting. I enjoyed the show and was impressed by his playing quite well enough I think. Classically trained or not, he's doing more mainstream stuff with this- and with it makes an interesting progression of potentials for violin and other classical instruments- I realized I could in theory apply the looping and pedal set up to other instruments, including my harmonicas potentially.

The venue was also nice, though small it was intimate and if I had more money and didn't have to pay for gas to get to Birmingham, etc...I'd definitely go early enough for food and the show as well. The bar wasn't bad either- beer selections looked interesting and they had at least 2 or 3 of my preferred whiskeys.

The Show gets 2 thumbs up 3 and a half to 4 stars out of 5, all in all a great show and a great venue I don't even mind that Lylas can't sing too well but plays their instruments in their rather largish band rather well or that Cadence Weapon is increasingly less articulate the more he drinks (big surprise) or that the Final Fantasy guy had a great time but I thought he might have cried if we didn't like him as much as we did.

Church Music Conference Organ Concert.

Festival Concert

The University of Alabama College of Arts & Sciences School of Music will present an organ concert on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at 4:30 pm.

Daniel Roth, titular organist at St. Sulpice, Paris, France will perform works by Nivers, Clérambault, Boëly, Widor, Tournemire, Messiaen, Grunenwald, Roth and Falcinelli. Mr. Roth will close with an improvisation on a submitted theme. Tickets are $12 adults, $7 seniors, and FREE to UA students and faculty with ID and Conference participants with conference badge. Daniel Roth, widely acclaimed as one of the leading French organ virtuosos, has held several prestigious positions as both performer and teacher. At the age of twenty he made his debut at the organ of the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur in Montmartre-Paris, as assistant of his teacher, Madame Rolande Falcinelli. He later succeeded her as titular organist, a post which he held until 1985 when he was appointed titular organist at St-Sulpice, the famous Paris church where is predecessors were Charles-Marie Widor, Marcel Dupré and Jean-Jacques Grunenwald. A former student at the Paris Conservatory, Daniel Roth's teachers have included Marie-Claire Alain and Maurice Durufé. He has won several competitions, among them the Grand Prix de Chartres 1971, interpretation and improvisation.

He is invited to play concerts as a soloist and with famous orchestras. Furthermore he teaches master classes and participates on juries for organ competitions throughout the world.

On the 11th November 2005 he has played the dedication of the new Karl Schuke (Berlin) Organ of the Concert Hall "Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte" in Luxembourg for the construction of which he has been artistic advisor.

A composer as well as performer, Daniel Roth has several works for organ, for flute and organ, choir and organ. The city of Ludwigshafen (Germany) commissioned him an orchestra piece. "Licht im Dunkel" first performed in this town in May 2005 and in Paris, St Etienne du Mont in April 2006 conducted by his son François-Xavier Roth. The work is published by Schott.

For his compositions he received the Florent Schmitt prize awarded by the Académie des Beaux-Arts (Institute de France). Daniel Roth is also well known for his brilliant improvisations which are regularly included in his concerts programs. He has many recordings to his credit covering pieces of the XVIIth century to the present time. Several of them were rewarded by the critics. He is Chavalier de la Légion d’Honneur, Officier des Arts et Lettres, Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Organists (London). In 2006 he received the European Prize of European sacred music from the Schwäbisch Gmünd Festival (Germany).

2008 University of Alabama Church Music Conference

The University of Alabama College of Arts & Sciences School of Music presents the 2008 University of Alabama Church Music Conference Friday, January 25-Saturday, January 26, 2008. This is an annual event which reaches the Southeastern US and attracts at least 100 church musicians from a five-state region. The theme this year is “The Messiaen Year: French Connections.” Conference events include two concerts:

Friday, January 25, 7:30 pm UA music faculty Noel Engebretson, Faythe Freese, Carlton McCreery, Osiris Molina, Peter Rovit, Charles Snead, and the University Singers under the direction of John Ratledge will perform works by Messiaen(Quartet for the End of Time), Hakim(World Premiere), and Vierne.

Acoustic Night @ The Bama Theatre This Thursday!

Acoustic Night continues in the Greensboro Room of The Bama Theatre this Thursday, November 15, at 8:00PM with musical guests Lauren Krothe and Lee Taylor.

Hailing from Huntsville, Lee Taylor is back by popular demand after opening Acoustic Night last month and stealing the show. This talented guitarist/singer-songwriter brings to mind the songwriting style of John Mayer, David Gray, etc., while his guitar talents remind us of James Taylor and Mark Knoffler.

Lauren Krothe returns as the hands-down favorite of Acoustic Night from last season. Lauren's style is reminiscent of the keyboard wizardry and songwriting styles of Laura Nyro, Tori Amos, and Joni Mitchell. This will be the Birmingham resident's third performance at Acoustic Night in the past year.

Admission is a skimpy $3, with all proceeds going to the artists. Our award-winning bar will be open, featuring imported and domestic beer, wine, and mixed drinks.

This includes marketing it to target audience, creating a marketing strategy with the promotions director and overseeing the underwriting staff. It's nearly Christmas time! That means it's cold (good thing we have hoodies!) but it's also time to start humming the Xmas tunes. Sufjan will help you with that one - or maybe you can help him!

The end of the year also means it's the last time anyone can catch My Brightest Diamond tour from her Bring Me the Workhorse album.

Castanets have decided to escape the cold by...escaping to Europe? Ok.

And finally our newest roster addition, Chris Schlarb, has set up some Quadraphonic Listening Events in cities across the US. These are free and all-ages, and will feature at least one of the 50 or so collaborators on his debut album, Twilight & Ghost Stories.

1------SUFJAN'S CHRISTMAS CONTEST! FREE STREAM------

It's Christmas time again! That means tightly bundled scarves, lively debates on the merits of real/plastic trees, a litany of Christmas television specials, and finding the perfect retro Christmas wrapping paper.

And gifts of course! Who could forget the gifts!

That's why Sufjan Stevens is busy working on a very special gift right now, for a very special person. And in the spirit of Christmas, that person will give Sufjan a similarly special gift.

Here's how it works: write an original Christmas song, record it, and email the song to us. Asthmatic Kitty will pick a winner, and that person will trade rights to their song for rights to a new Sufjan Christmas song.

Just like a gift exhange, Sufjan's new song becomes your song. You can hoard it for yourself, sell it to a major soft drink corporation, use it in your daughter's first Christmas video, or share it for free on your website. No one except Sufjan and you will hear his song, unless you decide otherwise. You get the song and all legal rights to it. We get the same rights to your song.

Contest begins November 9th, and all submissions must be in by midnight December 1st. We will contact and announce the winner on or around December 15th.

2------CHRIS SCHLARB NEWS, LISTENING PARTIES------

Our newest addition to the Asthmatic Kitty roster has been busy, even though his album doesn't release until December 4th. Pitchfork Media got their hands on a copy of Twilight and Ghost Stories, and reviewer Joe Tangari said this: "Twilight is a unique and remarkably universal record, and one that offsets its projected loneliness with a great sense of warmth. Indeed, it's perfect for listening to in the very circumstances that birthed the concept, when you're alone with the weather, wondering what to do."

We certainly don't want anyone going Schlarb-less, so we've gone ahead and started taking preorders for Twilight on the album's page below. It's $10 plus shipping, and we'll ship it around December 4.

You can catch the album at a variety of quadraphonic listening events that Chris has organized...see the bottom of this email for dates and locations. These events will feature the album in its entirety in quadraphonic stereo and in some cases performances by one or more of the 50ish collaborators Chris worked with on Twilight.

3------CATCH MBD'S WORKHORSE WHILE YOU CAN------

My Brightest Diamond's debut album, Bring Me the Workhorse, has seen a lot of land in its day. Frontwoman Shara Worden has toured near and far with the album, but all good things must come to an end.

And so, Workhorse embarks once more with a few more shows alongside Tim Fite for a brief spin around the Midwest, Canada, and New England. Then MBD will play a few bits with Sufjan Stevens in Sydney, Australia and that will be end of touring with the Workhorse. Into the studios with Shara for a new widely anticipated album! Catch this show while you can before it returns to the hills for a well-earned respite!

In their Illegal Leak of the Week column, Seattle's weekly paper The Stranger called Castanets' frontman Ray Raposa a great American songwriter. BBC wrote, "Raymond Raposa, the ex-surfer behind the ever-shifting line-up, sounds like Neil Young after spending a few nights on a park bench, his decayed folky croak the perfect thread to link these hushed laments."

Some Announcements from Tuscaloosa Contra Dancers...

Announcements:
1) Birmingham contra dance is this Saturday November 10, 8pm - 11pm.

For those of you interested in carpooling to the Birmingham contra, please contact Gloria either by email glojet@gmail.com or phone 316-518-0182 before 4:00pm Saturday Nov 10, 2007.

We meet at the Walmart on Skyland Blvd in their parking lot near the filling station area at 6:45 PM and leave by 7 PM. Hope to see lots of dancers.

Directions:
All Saturday night dances are held at the YWCA: From I-59/20 take the 22nd Street Exit. 22nd is one-way in the direction you want to go. Stay on it until you get to 3rd Avenue North. Turn left and go one block. The YWCA is on the corner of 23rd and 3rd and the parking lot is beside it on 3rd. We have a friendly security guard in that lot.

From 280 or the Red Mt. Expressway, take the 2nd Avenue North exit. Stay on 2nd until you get to 23rd Street North. Turn Right. Go one block and you will see the YWCA. Turn right on 3rd and park in the lot beside the Y.

2) There may be a contra on campus Nov 18 held by a residence hall. We will send out a confirmation.

3) Our next swing dance will be held on Saturday, Dec 1 at Forest Lake UMC. Save the date. Lesson: 7:15-7:45pm. Dance: 7:45-11:00pm

DINNER AND A MOVIE CONTINUES WITH "A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE"

“Dinner and a Movie” continues on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at 8pm with the screening of "A Streetcar Named Desire." Sponsored by Chuck’s Fish, the classic, award-winning film will be shown at the Bama Theatre, 600 Greensboro Avenue, in downtown Tuscaloosa.

Anyone who dines at Chuck's Fish the evening of November 13th will receive complimentary tickets to the movie. And, anyone who purchases walk up movie tickets at the Bama Theatre can bring their ticket stub to Chuck's to receive $5 off any food item. After being exiled from her hometown of Auriol, Mississippi for seducing a seventeen-year-old boy at the school where she taught English, Blanche explains her unexpected appearance on Stanley and Stella's (Blanche's sister) doorstep as nervous exhaustion. This, she claims, is the result of a series of financial calamities which have recently claimed the family plantation, Belle Reve. Suspicious, Stanley points out that "under Louisiana's Napoleonic code what belongs to the wife belongs to the husband." Stanley, a sinewy and brutish man, is as territorial as a panther. He tells Blanche he doesn't like to be swindled and demands to see the bill of sale. This encounter defines Stanley and Blanche's relationship. They are opposing camps and Stella is caught in no-man's-land. But Stanley and Stella are deeply in love. Blanche's efforts to impose herself between the two only enrages the animal inside Stanley. When Mitch -- a card-playing buddy of Stanley's -- arrives on the scene, Blanche begins to see a way out of her predicament.
