VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE
GETS NEW SITE WITHIN
NEW ORLEANS CITY PARK
T0 ACCOMMODATE ONGOING RESTORATION AND IMPROVEMENT OF PARK
This year’s VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE--set for October 26, 27 and 28--has a new location within its New Orleans City Park home. Adjacent to the site utilized in 2006, the new location is situated closer to Tad Gormley Stadium where the VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE was born in 1999.
After festival-goers enter the grounds in front of the New Orleans Museum Of Art (NOMA), they’ll walk by the 200, newly planted 6 foot Crepe Myrtle and Oak trees. These new trees are part of the ongoing efforts outlined in the park’s master plan to “preserve and improve park spaces for recreational, educational, cultural and beautification purposes.” More than 1,000 trees in City Park were toppled or extensively damaged after 90% of the park was flooded in the 2005 storms.
“Last year’s site was incredibly beautiful,” says Stephen Rehage, founder/producer of the VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE. “But after seeing the new trees in front of the museum, I just could not figure out the logistics of setting up the event around them. It actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise because the new site is perfection and we still get to showcase NOMA and the park to the rest of the world.”

Ticket Update from The Echo Project!
The Deadstring Brothers
The live performance will be filmed by an 11-person camera crew under the direction of Professor Joey Goodsell of the TCF Department. The resulting film will be mastered for a commercial release as a live DVD and later television broadcast.
The Detroit-based Deadstring Brothers will be touring in support of their new Bloodshot CD, "Silver Mountain," set for release on October 9.
Music critics have raved about and compared the Deadstring Brothers' sound to that of the "Exile"-era Rolling Stones, The Faces with Rod Stewart, The Band, The Flying Burrito Brothers - as well as Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. The DSB's mixture of rock and roll, country, blues, and soul is the perfect synthesis of what Parsons termed, "Cosmic American Music."
General admission tickets are $5 and are available at Oz Music locations and at The Bama Theatre box office during events and day of the show.

New Schedule From Bottle Tree = Really Long Post! The more shows, the merrier, I suppose. :)
Vintage T-shirts? I LOVE vintage T-shirts!
My name is Brandon Gardner. I am a former student of the U of A. I have moved on from my days at the Capstone and have been selling vintage clothing since the day that I left Tuscaloosa. I am having a Vintage T-Shirt show on Thursday September 20th at the Ferguson Center Plaza. All of my shirts are authentic. I do no sell reproductions or reprinted t's. All of the shirts are from the 1970's and 1980's. As you can see from the pictures below this will not be my first show. I have had two other shows at a bar in Birmingham called Rojo. The two shows have been so successful that I am ready to take the show on the road. The Birmingham Weekly wrote a great article about my last show that you might want to check out http:// blog.myspace .com/index. cfm?fuseaction=blog. view&friendID= 45966334&blogID= 278546768 . The show will also feature a lot of vintage western shirts, crazy disco and 70's stuff, as well as some vintage jackets. The main focus will be on the t-shirt.
Looks pretty cool! Check out the Ferg Plaza on Thursday, Sept. 20th!

Ham 1 info
www.ham1.org
www.myspace.com/ham1
A ringing attribute of Jim Willingham’s songwriting is that it
manages to be both exuberant and high-minded -- inviting and literate
-- all at once. Combining the terse acoustic propulsion of the late-
model Feelies with the breezy, half-stoned-on-the-beach pop-ambiance
of Dean Wareham’s Luna, Willingham nevertheless brings a distinctive
Athenian warmth to his Captain’s Table. It figures: there are horn-
charts and string-sections, burst veins of Link Wray-ish guitarplay,
pastoral keyboard-drones, tremulous bits of Hawaiian slack-key guitar
and some country-fried saunter up under the rhythm section. Chiefly,
though, there’s that friendly storytelling voice -- half-sung, half-
spoken – escorting you through the broken waltzes, atmospheric
ballads and jittery rockers, all.
For his first Orange Twin release, Willingham capitalizes on his
longstanding musical relationship with a pair of veteran Elephant Six
luminaries; former Olivia Tremor Control members, drummer/multi-
instrumentalist Eric Harris and keyboardist Pete Erchick, make key
textural and compositional contributions to the new disk. Rounding
out the idiosyncratic lineup are Athens fixtures Jacob Morris and
Chris Sugiuchi on cello and trombone, respectively; acclaimed local
songstress Liz Durrett, whom the band often backs on stage, lends her
rich vocal harmony to two tracks.
A solid couple years of playing around the south have shorn up the
group’s ensemble sound, and “The Captain’s Table” is strong proof;
the group’s intricate instrumental chemistry frames the record
perfectly, coalescing Willingham’s sprawling vision into a unified
artistic whole -- this is no loose collection of songwriter-plus-band
musings. Producer Andy Baker’s shimmering, vibrant patina serves each
song with minimal intrusion; there’s an airy, informal atmosphere to
the album that makes for rewarding repeated listening: you can choose
to skate along the brilliantly crystalline surface of each song or
dive full-bore into Willingham’s weird and beautiful lyrical world.

Liz Durrett info

Liz Durrett’s music exists at the twilight crossroads of “soothing”
and “unsettling.” (HARP)
In 2005, Warm Electronic Recordings released Liz’s debut album
‘Husk’. Originally recorded as a demo in an effort to obtain a record
deal, the collection of songs proved to be strong enough in its own
right and quickly obtained widespread critical acclaim for it’s
‘stark loveliness’ (Washington Post) and it’s ‘threadbare sonic
tapestry’ (Splendid Magazine) as well as drawing complimentary
comparisons to the works of Gillian Welch and Hope Sandoval (Mazzy
Star).
In 2006, Liz Durrett’s second album, “The Mezzanine” was released by
Warm Electronic Recordings. In contrast to her previous work, “The
Mezzanine” is a surprisingly hi-fi affair. Gone are the hissing
ghosts and unsure echoes that once haunted and obscured her
recordings. And while producer and occasional performer Vic Chesnutt
still adds his trademark, artfully ramshackle recording techniques
and veteran engineer Andy Baker (Macha, Japancakes, Glands) attends
to the more traditional sonic details, they wisely let Durrett steer
the album this time around. It’s her voice and guitar that are the
focus here. And that’s important, because Durrett performs with more
energy, determination and flat out rawness than she ever has before.
From the curiously up-tempo “Cup On The Counter” to the visceral
lament of “Marlene”, Durrett covers a lot of ground within the
album’s eleven songs. Possessing the quiet vehemence of an
approaching storm, “The Mezzanine” proves that Liz Durrett has a
voice that will be heard for many years to come.

Moss (Frankie Sparo), Eric Craven & Genevieve Heistek (Hangedup),

Cinema Nouveau presents "Sicko"
September 14 - 20
Sicko (2007)
www.michaelmoore.com/sicko
Directed by Michael Moore
Documentary -Health Care / Rated PG-13 / 1 hour 53 minutes / color
America 's most incendiary filmmaker, Michael Moore, returned in 2007 with this health-care-industry exposé. SICKO tackles material as controversial as the topics explored in Moore's other films, yet does so in a way that places the focus on ordinary Americans affected by the nation's health-care crisis.
After providing some historical background on how our nation's medical care system became so ravaged and unfair, Moore interviews a series of individuals and families who have had their lives all but destroyed by the denial of care in the service of profit. While there are two sides to
the gun-control debate and even a legitimate discourse for how to best wage the war on terror, it's simply impossible to justify how a baby girl can wind up dead because her mother's health insurance wasn't accepted at a nearby hospital. Moore smartly allows this and other stories to be told with little or no interference, conjuring strong feelings of empathy, rage, and deep sadness.
Of course, SICKO isn't a PBS documentary, it's a Michael Moore movie, and his fingerprints are all over it. Moore visits countries that have universal health care--spectacularly so when he takes several World Trade Center workers to Guantanamo Bay (and then to Cuba) to receive health care that they were denied in the United States--and presents a compelling argument
for adopting a similar system in the States. Moore 's ultimate purpose here is to compel Americans to care for one another, and it's a simple request that shockingly must be made via a major motion picture, making SICKO essential viewing.
