International Opportunities for All!

The International Honors Program and the Capstone International Center will sponsor an information session on UA's interim and summer overseas programs for 2008. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 23 from 4:00-5:00 in 205 Gorgas Library. Ms. Channell and participating UA faculty will be there to describe our programs and answer questions you may have. Our programs this year are in: Austria, Brazil, China, Ireland, Ecuador, France, Ghana, India, Italy, Korea, London, Oxford, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey. You may read the description of the programs by clicking on each link at http://international.ua.edu/overseas-study/index.htm . This meeting will be open to all UA students, but Honors College students are particularly welcome.

Another piece of exciting news: The Critical Languages Center is happy to announce that Farsi (Persian, also spoken in Afghanistan) is officially being offered at UA! You may reigster for FRS 101 on Banner. An alternative for those of you who are strategically-minded is the study of Urdu (spoken in Pakistan). More students are needed to register for this critical language as well. Contact the CLC director, Mr. Arizumi, for complete information at karizumi@as.ua.edu .

Attached is a lengthy compiliation of international opportunities for students in all disciplines and/or language interests. I recommend that you read all the announcements. Information about a particular program may spark your interest in finding a similar program in your own area of interest. Remember that the announcements listed here are just the starting point: contact the study abroad advisors in the Capstone International Center before registering for any overseas program or internship.

The programs listed in the attachment include:
  • Critical Need Foreign Languages Scholarships: Friday, January 25, 2008
  • Undergraduate Research Internship Program in Germany
“For the first year, there will be no program fee for students. 25 scholarships of € 1850 each are available to cover living expenses.” Deadline January 31, 2008.

Happy, Happy! & UA at Oxford

Dear Honors College Students,

I hope you are having and will continue to have the most marvelous holiday! It is good to study, and it is good to cease from study!

I remind you of the Alabama at Oxford program in second term summer, which boasts two wonderful honors courses: UH 210 The Arts of Oxford, taught by Ms. Allen Jones and EN 216 Honors English Literature 2, taught by me. Also there is a linguistics course "The Queen's
English," taught by Dr. Catherine Davies, a history course on British Popular Music, taught by Dr. John Beeler, and a Shakespeare course, taught by me. As I've mentioned to you earlier, this is a truly wonderful program, and I thought it best to bring it back to your attention while you are in the presence of folks who might love to ship you out of the country for five weeks in England next summer.

You can find more information at: http://international.ua.edu/overseas-study/summer/Oxford.html. From that page click on Brochure.

I'd love to see the whole Oxford contingent made up of Honors College students!

Best wishes,

Bob Halli

Announcing the opening of International Issues in Istanbul (GBA 491) : Alabama in Istanbul

Announcing the opening of International Issues in Istanbul (GBA 491): Alabama in Istanbul

This course is a course in international marketing and business taught by marketing professor Dr. Glenn Richey http://cba.ua.edu/personnel/GlennRichey.html from May 15th to 30th. Istanbul provides a perfect setting for all majors in the discussion of inter-organizational trade issues today and throughout history. The region is at the crossroads of nearly every historic empire, displays fantastic Roman and Byzantine infrastructure, and shifts from the strength of Ottoman trade to the evolution of Ataturk's business power. As such, the course will center on international business-to-business relationships, including but not limited to components of economics, politics, culture, demography, geography/nature, and technology. As for uniqueness, today Turkey boasts one of the worlds leading emerging economies despite being excluded from the EU for many years. The country also offers students a safe and unique opportunity to experience a culture where capitalism and Islam mix successfully. In brief, where else can a student spend the day in both Europe and Asia without leaving the host city? The course will offer a truly unique international experience and bolster nearly any student’s academic experience and resume.

SITE VISITS AND EXCURSIONS

Site visits and excursions are an integral part of the Alabama in Istanbul program. Site visits and excursions are planned (subject to change at director's discretion) to the following:

· Blue Mosque & Haghia Sophia
· Bosphorus Dinner Cruise
