UAPD's Safer Living Guide

Dear Students:

Welcome back to UA! We hope you enjoyed your holidays and that the new semester will be a good one for you. As you settle into the new year, we want to encourage you to continue to make good decisions that enhance not only your academic success but your personal safety as well.

Take a few minutes to review UAPD's Safer Living Guide (http://police.ua.edu) and remember these safety guidelines:

  • Lock your doors and windows at all times, even when you are home.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Walk in groups in well-lighted areas.
  • Remember that students who are impaired are at a greater risk for harm to person and property.
  • Be the friend you'd want to have when your peers need help.

Call UAPD (348-5454) or TPD (348-2121) immediately if an incident occurs, or you become concerned about your safety. Program the phone numbers for UAPD and TPD into your cell and Tuscaloosa residence phones.

Here are additional steps you can take:
  • Take advantage of 348-CAB9 when you need transportation around Tuscaloosa.
  • Next semester, register for the new for-credit personal safety course.
  • If you live off-campus, participate in Crimson Watch, the SGA's neighborhood watch program.
  • Use Crimson Choice to help you make decisions about off-campus housing for the fall.
  • Call UAPD to schedule a safety presentation for your group or organization.
  • Take Crimson Ride if you need transportation on campus.
  • Call 348-RIDE if you need transportation around campus or between your residence and campus after Crimson Ride bus hours.

Remember that crime can and does occur anywhere. Learn and practice the life-skills you need now and for a lifetime, wherever you live and work.
